Collections and excavations

The project is based in part on new archaeological field programmes (excavations and archaeological surveys), as well as on the analysis of collections, samples and archives from past excavations in Pakistan and Iran. These data are stored in museums and research units around the world.

The AGROCHRONO project joined the French Archaeological Mission in the Indus Valley (MAFBI), led by Aurore Didier and co-directed by David Sarmiento-Castillo, to carry out new excavations in Sindh region of Pakistan. These field operations, led by Benjamin Mutin and Pascal Mongne, aim to analyse Neolithic and Chalcolithic occupation in this area. To this end, surveys carried out in 2024 will be supplemented this year by a new survey and excavation campaign. The new excavations, which began in 2025, concern the site of Peyojero-mari (Ghazi Shah).

In Iran, AGROCHRONO is joining the Franco-Iranian Archaeological Mission in South-East Iran (MAFISE) led by Benjamin Mutin. It draws on the results of operations conducted by MAFISE in the Bam region, as well as other collaborations by this mission in other regions of south-eastern Iran.

Furthermore, AGROCHRONO builds on collaborations initiated with the National Museum of Iran (https://hal.science/hal-04046460v2) and the development of new projects with several archaeologists working in southern Iran and as far as the Indo-Iranian border (IIBL).
